A Tour Guide All to Yourself - Take a Private Carriage Tour

Carriage tours are one of the best ways to see the city, and taking a private tour is a great treat for those who would like a more luxurious ride and the undivided attention of their own personal tour guide. Private carriages are a favorite for those enjoying an anniversary, a family vacation, or a fun day exploring downtown.

Private tours start at $200.00 for the hour long residential tour. All tour routes cover approximately 30 blocks of the downtown historic district. Tours include downtown homes, churches, and historic public buildings as well as full narration by a tour guide certified by the City of Charleston. A private carriage can be scheduled to pick you up and drop you off at your hotel (as long as it is located within a certain distance of the barn) for an additional fee.

How Many in Your Party?

The smaller vis-avis carriages can hold up to four people (as well as additional children three years of age or under who would sit on a lap). If your party is larger and you still prefer a private tour, a mid-size wagonette carriage can be reserved depending on availability. Wagonette carriages can seat up to eight people.

Tour Hours and Reservations

Carriage Tours run from 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. E.S.T. (hours are extended to 5:00 p.m. during Daylight Savings Time). Unlike group tours, private tours sell out quickly and reservations are highly recommended. Reservations can be made days, weeks, or months in advance. They are first come, first served, so the earlier you book, the better. Be advised that during the busy season, private tours are often limited to morning reservations only.

Things You'll Want to Bring

Camera, sunglasses, a jacket or sweater in cooler months. Guests are able to bring nonacoholic drinks and snacks on the tour with them. Drinks and snacks may also be purchased in the Barn Shop at Palmetto Carriage Works.

While You're in the Downtown Charleston Area

While you're in the area, check out the open air market located just one block south of the carriage tour. Guests may also want to consider a tour at one of the downtown house museums, a harbor tour, or a sail aboard the Schooner Pride.

My husband and I took a tour with Palmetto Carriage Works last summer. As a Charleston native, it was my first carriage ride and we loved it! Our guide was very knowledgable about the city of Charleston (not just the South of Broad section of our tour) and kept the whole group entertained with jokes and stories. Playing "tourist in my hometown" for a day was so worth it. For Charleston enthusiasts (both locals and visitors alike), treat yourself to a Palmetto Carriage Works tour. You won't regret it.

We had an hour long private tour of historic Charleston. Our tour guide was knowledgeable and made the tour fun. The private tour allowed for a good bit of questions and answers which made the event more personal. The carriage was clean and very pretty. It is well worth it for the personal treatment!

Client Testimonials

  • A Charleston resident suggested a Traveling Ink concierge might be able to help me. It didn’t take long for me to realize that this was one of the best pieces of advice I could have received. My friends thought I was an organizational wizard even though I kept telling them it was Traveling Ink, not me.

  • We so enjoyed our time in Charleston. Thank you for all your insight! I am recommending your services to everyone I know who is traveling to Charleston!

  • Traveling Ink planned the three full days we would have in Charleston, how we would get from one place to another, places to eat, and what the costs would be. To add to the challenge, we had to change the day of one of the main attractions because rain had been predicted. They handled all the changes with out missing a step.

  • These Charleston pros do a phenomenal job in any setting. Audra was our point person and is a pleasure to work with. She is laid back and can work with any request.
