AN OVERVIEW

Take in the streets of Charleston with a walking tour hosted by some of Charleston's most experienced tour guides at Palmetto Tours. Guests are able to choose a general or specialized tour depending on their interests. On each tour, visitors will be lead by a tour guide certified by the City of Charleston. Guests will have extended time to delve into the charm and richness of the city's historic district whether it be for an overview of Charleston or more information on one of the company's specialty tours such as the Civil War or historic homes and architecture.

Historic Charleston • 2 Hour Tour • $20 per guest

From the first rice crop in the colonies to the first shot of the Civil War, Charleston has been a vital part of American history since its founding in 1670. It boasts the oldest Preservation Law in America, protecting over 500 historic buildings including homes, churches, and public structures from the Colonial to Antebellum periods. Highlights of this tour include the Dock Street Theater, The Battery, St. Michael's Church, and Rainbow Row. *The tour also includes a visit to the Powder Magazine, the oldest surviving building in the Province of Carolina.

 

Historic Homes & Architecture • 2 Hour Tour • $30 per guest

Robert Mills, America's first native-born architect most famous for designing the Washington Monument, called Charleston home. The streets of downtown Charleston resemble an architectural museum, full of colonial and antebellum mansions. Guests enjoying this tour will learn about the "Charleston single house" and the construction techniques used to build these homes. Highlights along this tour include The French Huguenot Church (Gothic Revival), the Roper Mansion (Greek Revival), Drayton House (Victorian), and the Calhoun Mansion (Italianate). **The tour includes a visit to either the Edmonston-Alston House (Regency Style) or the Nathaniel Russell House (Adamesque).

The Civil War started here in Charleston. South Carolina was the first state to secede from the Union and became the center of the States Rights movement in America. During this tour, guests will learn about the High Battery, wartime blockade runners, the first successful submarine attack in world history, and the longest seige in American history - 587 days! The tour also includes a visit to the Edmonston-Alston House on the Battery, where the first shots of War were witnessed by Confederate officers. *The tour also includes a visit to the Powder Magazine, the oldest surviving building in the Province of Carolina.

Charleston's Slave History • 2 Hour Tour • $22 per guest

An eye-opening look at one of the most significant chapters of American history. Charleston was the largest slave port in the American colonies, accounting for about 40% of the African Americans coming across the Atlantic. This two hour tour will cover aspects of the daily life of a slave, the challenges overcome by enslaved Africans, and the influence of the vibrant Gullah culture in the lowcountry lifestyle. ***This tour also includes a visit to the Slave Mart Museum, the site of Charleston's largest slave auction house OR the Old Exchange Building, a National Landmark, where the Constitution was ratified and George Washington danced.
