Charleston Carriage Tours

The Charleston historic district is one of the largest and most beautiful in the world, and one of the absolute best ways to experience it is by taking a carriage tour. Guests will join a tour guide certified by the city of Charleston who will tell them what they are seeing as they roll through the streets of the historic district. These men and women know their stuff and pass both written and oral tests to become tour guides in Charleston.

There are two types of carriage tours available in Charleston. The first is an hour long tour which covers approximately 30 blocks of the downtown historic district and includes the residential area. This is the tour Traveling Ink recommends in most cases as you get the best overall summary of both the business district and residential streets. These hour long tours operate from 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. The other type of tours operate after 5:00 p.m. and are referred to as Commercial Tours. They last a half hour and do not go into the area where homes are located. For folks wishing to take a quick ride or who are hesitant to take an hour long tour with younger kids, this might be a good fit. For those folks wanting to take in as much history as possible, usually the hour long tour is preferable.

Guests may choose from a group or private carriage tour. Group tours typically leave every 15 - 20 minutes and are usually booked on a first come, first served basis. Group carriages can seat up to sixteen people on four rows. However, Palmetto carriage will not wait for the carriage tour to fill up before departing. The tour will leave at its scheduled time regardless of how many people have signed up. Guests should be aware that in peak times of the year (April, May, and October) carriages will likely be close to full. Traveling Ink guests are eligible for a discount on hour long group carriage tours. Click here for a Charleston carriage tour coupon.
