How Art Thou Cafe Tapas and Jazz Bar

1956 Maybank Hwy. Charleston, SC 29412 • (843) 793-2231

AN OVERVIEW

"Sometimes you wanna go where everybody knows your name". That was a driving factor in the owners' vision of How Art Thou Cafe and Wine Bar. Add to that a creative finesse, fresh, local ingredients and suppliers to help create the menu, and a vast array of beverage options from specialty juices to craft beers to fine wine, and you've found How Art Thou Cafe on James Island.

THE BAR

The bar at How Art Thou has a laid-back atmosphere where folks can come enjoy a drink in a comfortable environment. It is bar with a bit of a classy finish without being pretentious. The bar is an easy place to meet new friends, or a venue old friends can come catch up without being disturbed. The place has also evolved into a wonderful venue for live jazz music in Charleston.

THE SELECTION

What How Art Thou may lack in a lighter mixed drink selection, it more than makes up for in its selection of wine and beer. There are weekly beer tastings every Tuesday night. Guests receive a flight of four different craft beers in a themed selection. The Rocky Mountain high theme produced a selection of beer from Colorado breweries, while the 7-up theme focused on the beer's alcoholic content level. The bar carries over 80 different types of foreign and domestic beers including local beer from Holy City, Westbrook, RJ Rocker, and Riverdog.

For the wine lover, the selection is unbeatable for a local bar of its size. Simply put, there is something for every wine palette at How Art Thou. Wine tastings are done on Thursday nights where themes such as California Dreaming give the tastings a focus.

Guests can also enjoy a qualty selection of coffee, espresso, lattes, and tea. All are made to order and have the option of extra flavor shots added.

LOCATION

The cafe is tucked into the Terrace Theatre shopping plaza on Maybank Hwy. Patrons can choose to sit at the bar, out on the patio, or at a table across from the house piano where live music plays many evenings (and guests themselves are encouraged to play if a professional musician is not up on stage already).

Hours: Monday: Closed. Tuesday - Sunday 4:00 p.m. - 10:00 pm.

How Art Thou Cafe is exactly what James Island was missing for quite some time! The staff are so efficient, yet treat you like family. Joshua and Liz Miller's dream is coming true--of establishing a place where the community can "be encouraged to explore their own identity and artistic expression and be creatively inspired" ! The cafe wants you to come and stick around. They really do well at making the cafe a cozy and welcoming environment for a gathering of your friends, a comfortable spot to loose yourself in a book, or to hear local guest performances. They have lots of drink choices to choose from, depending on your mood (although my personal favorite is the "dirty chocolate chai latte"). It's friendly for those "on a budget" too. Two thumbs up, HAT! I'll be back...

Client Testimonials

  • A Charleston resident suggested a Traveling Ink concierge might be able to help me. It didn’t take long for me to realize that this was one of the best pieces of advice I could have received. My friends thought I was an organizational wizard even though I kept telling them it was Traveling Ink, not me.

  • We so enjoyed our time in Charleston. Thank you for all your insight! I am recommending your services to everyone I know who is traveling to Charleston!

  • Traveling Ink planned the three full days we would have in Charleston, how we would get from one place to another, places to eat, and what the costs would be. To add to the challenge, we had to change the day of one of the main attractions because rain had been predicted. They handled all the changes with out missing a step.

  • These Charleston pros do a phenomenal job in any setting. Audra was our point person and is a pleasure to work with. She is laid back and can work with any request.
